Systems Architecture & Design

For organisations planning new systems or redesigning existing ones.

Systems architecture planning documentation

Systems architecture is the discipline of defining the structure of a computer system before it is built. This includes the identification and arrangement of components, the design of interfaces and integration points, the selection of technology platforms and the documentation of the design rationale in a form that guides all subsequent work.

NETWISE LTD provides end-to-end architectural design services, from initial feasibility assessment and technology evaluation through to the production of a complete reference architecture document. Our architects have delivered system designs across enterprise, public sector, healthcare and financial services environments, with direct experience of the operational realities that constrain architectural choices in each sector.

What is included
Current state assessment and gap analysis
Requirements review and architectural brief development
Technology evaluation and platform selection
Reference architecture documentation with design rationale
Component specifications and interface definitions
Security and compliance architecture layer
Implementation roadmap and phasing recommendation
Business Outcome
A documented system architecture that reduces implementation risk, guides vendor selection, enables accurate cost estimation and provides the organisation with a clear technical foundation for the project.

IT Infrastructure Planning

For organisations specifying physical and virtual infrastructure investments.

Network infrastructure planning and specification

Infrastructure planning translates the outputs of systems architecture into detailed specifications for the physical and virtual components that will underpin the system. This encompasses compute platforms, storage solutions, networking topology, power and cooling requirements, virtualisation strategy, redundancy design and disaster recovery provisions.

Poor infrastructure planning is a frequent cause of project cost overruns and post-deployment performance problems. Undersized components, inadequate redundancy, poorly specified networking and unplanned integration constraints all carry significant remediation costs. Our planning service eliminates these risks through methodical specification work conducted by practitioners with direct delivery experience across on-premises, cloud and hybrid environments.

What is included
Capacity modelling and sizing analysis
Compute, storage and network topology specification
Redundancy and high-availability design
Disaster recovery architecture and RPO/RTO planning
Vendor and product evaluation support
Bill of materials and capital cost modelling
Implementation sequencing and risk register
Business Outcome
A complete infrastructure specification that supports accurate procurement, reduces implementation surprises, ensures appropriate resilience and provides the basis for ongoing capacity management.

Technical Consulting & Advisory

For organisations requiring independent technical perspective on complex decisions.

Technical consulting session

Organisations frequently face technology decisions where independent, experienced technical perspective is more valuable than additional internal opinion. Whether the decision involves significant capital investment, complex vendor evaluation, review of a proposed architecture, or assessment of a struggling programme, an external advisor with relevant experience can materially improve the quality of the decision.

NETWISE LTD provides independent technical advisory services with no commercial interest in the outcome beyond the quality of the advice. Our consultants have reviewed and advised on technology programmes across a broad range of sectors, including healthcare, financial services, manufacturing, retail, education and local government. Engagements range from single-day assessment sessions to extended advisory retainers for organisations managing continuous technology investment programmes.

What is included
Independent architectural review and critique
Vendor and product evaluation support
Technology investment appraisal
Programme health assessment and risk identification
Technical due diligence for procurement and M&A
Board and senior management technical briefings
Ongoing advisory retainer arrangements
Business Outcome
Improved confidence in technology decisions, earlier identification of programme risks, and independent technical validation that supports investment committee and board approvals.

Systems Integration

For organisations connecting disparate platforms, applications and data systems.

Systems integration project environment

Systems integration is among the most technically demanding disciplines in the IT profession. The complexity of connecting systems that were designed independently, by different teams, at different times, using different data models and communication protocols is consistently underestimated during project planning. This underestimation is responsible for a substantial proportion of all IT project overruns.

NETWISE LTD provides integration architecture design and delivery assurance services that address this complexity systematically. We design integration layers that are maintainable, well-documented and resilient to the evolution of the connected systems. Our approach to integration documentation ensures that the organisations we work with are not left dependent on the knowledge of individual implementers.

What is included
Integration architecture design and pattern selection
Interface specification and data mapping documentation
Middleware and API gateway evaluation
Data quality and transformation design
Integration testing strategy and test case definition
Error handling and exception management design
Operations runbook and support documentation
Business Outcome
A coherent, documented integration architecture that reduces implementation complexity, enables reliable data exchange and provides the basis for independent ongoing maintenance.

Technical Project Management

Experienced technical project management for complex system implementations, where traditional project management disciplines need to be augmented by deep technical understanding of the work being managed. We provide scope governance, risk management, vendor coordination and delivery assurance for demanding IT programmes where technical judgement is as important as process discipline.

Outcome — Controlled, on-scope programme delivery

Questions about working with us

If your question is not addressed here, please contact us directly. We are glad to discuss the specifics of your situation before any formal engagement.

Most engagements begin with an initial consultation — typically a structured one to two hour session in which we seek to understand the client's current situation, the problem they are trying to solve and the constraints that apply. This session is held without charge and without obligation. Following this, we produce a proposed scope of work with defined deliverables, timeline and fees, which the client can accept, modify or decline.

Yes. While our base is in Crewe, we work with clients across the United Kingdom. Many engagements can be conducted primarily through remote working, supplemented by on-site visits at key stages of the project. For engagements requiring significant on-site presence, we discuss travel and accommodation arrangements as part of the initial scoping process.

We have direct delivery experience in healthcare, financial services, manufacturing, retail, logistics, education, local government, housing associations, professional services and utilities. In each sector, we have worked on engagements that required understanding of sector-specific regulatory requirements, operational constraints and technology patterns. When a client's sector is outside our direct experience, we say so clearly and discuss how we would approach the engagement.

Our primary capability is in architecture, design and advisory. For most engagements, implementation is carried out by the client's own IT team, by an existing managed service provider, or by a vendor's professional services organisation. We can provide delivery assurance, technical oversight and quality review during implementation to ensure that the as-built system matches the design intent. Where we do take on implementation work directly, it is limited to engagements where our specific technical expertise is essential to the delivery outcome.

We work on fixed-fee project engagements for discrete pieces of work with defined scope and deliverables, and on day-rate or monthly retainer arrangements for ongoing advisory relationships. We discuss fees transparently at the scoping stage and will not commence work until the scope and commercial terms are agreed in writing. We do not operate on a time and materials basis without defined scope, as this creates an incentive structure that is not aligned with the client's interest in controlling cost.

Yes. Programme recovery is a significant part of our advisory practice. We are experienced in assessing troubled projects, identifying root causes, evaluating options and helping clients make informed decisions about how to proceed. In some cases this leads to an agreed recovery plan that we assist in implementing. In other cases it leads to the conclusion that the project should be restructured significantly, and we help the client manage that conversation with vendors and stakeholders. Early intervention produces significantly better outcomes than waiting for a failing project to exhaust its budget.
